Trauma-AID

Chief Investigator: Prof Peter Langdon

Summary

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in adults with intellectual disabilities

Study hypothesis

EMDR provides value for money, improves the mental health and quality of life for people with intellectual difficulties (PwID) who suffer PTSD when compared to standard available treatment

Study Design

The study is designed as a randomised controlled trial (RCT), with internal pilot phases and a nested qualitative study to assess fidelity, adherence and factors that influence primary and secondary outcomes. Patients will be randomised to either  a combined Psychoeducation and Stabilisation (PES) and EMDR protocol adapted for PwID or the standard treatment offered locally and followed up for 14 months post-randomisation, with follow-up assessments at 4, 8 and 14 months. Health economic outcomes will be determined from data collected at baseline and 14-month assessments.
